The Cat's Meow store had been a true institution on Portland's Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard for 23 years, until its demise on April 19 this year. The Store Cats, Sterling (pictured) and Willow, were seen often sleeping in the front window or on the checkout counter right next to a cash register.
Near the end of the store's existence, an email had gone out seeking a loving home for the two kitties. Soon the cats were adopted together.
From Cat's Meow, April 17, 2009:
Dear friends,
The Cat's Meow's last day will be this Sunday, April 19th. We'll open at 11am and will have extended hours until 6-7pm, depending on when the trickle of evening visitors slows down. Also, all of our inventory is now marked down to 75% off. We still have some beautiful antique and hand painted furniture that has been marked down as well. Come by for some great savings and for final farewells!
It's been a great 23 years, and we couldn't have done any of it without you. We cannot thank you enough for all your support, and we wish the best to all of you.
P.S. We are very pleased to report that our beloved Willow and Sterling are very much enjoying their new home together. They are very comfortable and content in their first week of retirement, and are easing quite well into this new chapter of their lives as happy and affectionate lap cats.
Farewell, and, again, many thanks!
Love,
Linda,
Bronwyn,
Carrie,
Jen,
and
Willow and Sterling

Hope to see you soon!
Thank you so much for the visits and your support!
